当晚，众多英伦大牌摇滚乐队和歌手纷纷亮相演出，分别有解散已20年的平克?弗洛伊德(Pink Floyd)乐队、英国城市说唱流派第一人Dizzee Rascal、英国女歌手艾梅丽?桑德(Emeli Sande)以及北极猴子(Arctic Monkeys)等等。而少不了的还有一个注定被铭记的场景，前披头士成员保罗?麦卡特尼(Paul McCartney)带领数万人合唱《Hey Jude》，浓浓的怀旧感让在场的观众所有观众激动不已，整个奥运会开幕式无疑也是一个英伦摇滚盛会。
不可不提，开幕式第三幕的“迈向未来”响起了长达20分的摇滚音乐，其中包括甜心宝贝(Sugababes)的《Push the Button》、新浪潮乐团OMD的《Enola Gay》、Rizzle Kicks的《When I Was a Youngster》、果酱乐队(The Jam)的《Going Underground》、The Who乐队的《My Generation》。
而随后接着还有滚石乐队(The Rolling Stones)的《Satisfaction》、Millie Small的《My Boy Lollipop》、The Kinks乐队的《All Day and All of the Night》、披头士乐队的《She Loves You》、泥浆乐队(Mud)的《Tiger Feet》、齐柏林乐团(Led Zeppelin)的《Trampled Under Foot到性乐队(Sex Pistols)《Pretty Vacant》等等20首作品精彩呈现。
其后在运动员仪式环节上，大会也将New Order乐队的《Blue Monday》、酷玩乐队(Coldplay)的《Viva La Vida》、化学兄弟组合(The Chemical Brothers)的《Galvanize》以及人气歌手阿黛勒(Adele )的《Rolling in the Deep》等多首英国流行乐坛代表单曲作为当晚环节的背景音乐。当运动员入场仪式结束之后，北极猴乐队精彩亮相演绎成名曲《I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor》和披头士乐队成员的歌曲《Come Together》进行了运动员放飞和平鸽的传统环节。
而当晚最值得期待的点火环节，最后由7名年轻人互相传递，并接过其他6名火炬手中的火炬，点燃了送给每个代表团的每个“花瓣”，完成主火炬点亮的关键环节。不可不提，随后在奥运开幕式结束一日后，大会将推出2012伦敦开幕原声大碟《Isles of Wonder: Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games》。
