为什么那么多：
最简单的解释是因为大学多。NCAA有1200多所大学参赛。当然，并不是所有学校都有参加碗赛的资格，这个下面会提到。理论上有碗赛资格的学校一共为127所（没记错的话）。这些大学当然都是希望在碗赛露脸的，一是为了荣誉，二是为了传统，三是为了更好地跨赛区表现自己以便于来年的招新。而每个碗赛只能有两支队伍参加，所以，自从1930年代以来，NCAA的碗赛就约办越多，到今天，这127所大学里，大约有三分之二能拿到碗赛的资格。
但是，碗赛和碗赛之间是不平等的，也要分三六九等。有的碗赛关注度高、水平高、有历史有传统，也有的碗赛影响力低、没什么历史，经常被戏称为Toilet Bowl。
名额怎么分配:
并不是每一支大学橄榄球队都有机会参加Bowl Games。实际上，大多数有橄榄球队的大学是没有机会的（例如Ivy League的那些）。要想去Bowl Games，你得是FBS的球队。FBS是Football Bowl Subdivision，是NCAA Division-1里的一个subdivision，和Ivy他们所在的FCS相对应。
FBS里面有10个分区联赛，分别是：
五大顶级联赛：Pac-12、Big 12、Big Ten、SEC和ACC。
五大中强联赛：C-USA、MAC、Mountain West、Sun Belt和AAC（原Big East）。
另外还有独立球队：圣母大学、杨百翰大学和西点军校。
再然后，原则上，赛季的常规联赛里，必须赢得至少6场比赛，才有可能参加碗赛。
以今年（2015年）赛季为例。
原则上，各个碗赛的参赛队填坑次序为:
Rose Bowl: Big Ten冠军 vs Pac-12冠军
Sugar Bowl: SEC冠军 vs Big 12冠军
