二十世纪人道精神划时代伟人、非洲圣人史怀哲博士(Albert Schweitzer, 1875-1965) ，德（法裔）国人；出生于阿尔萨斯（Elsas）的一个小镇肯萨斯堡（Kaysersberg）。这是位于法国中部的东方，与德国相邻界的莱茵河西侧地方，所以当地人以德、法语作为通用的语言。史怀哲在孩童时期即能自如地使用两国语言。根据他的讲述，家庭里写信时习惯用法文，著述和演讲时用德文。当时阿尔萨斯正属于德国，所以史怀哲的母语应该是德文。因为有双语的环境，造就他后来以法（1905年）、德（1908年）两种语言完成《巴赫传》这不朽名作。这本书也是今日音乐学者研究巴赫的经典著作，它也是巴赫音乐最有力的福音宣扬者。

为何身为学者、巴赫专家、管风琴建筑师与演奏家的史怀哲，原本可以轻而易举地把他的一生奉献给音乐，最后却反而选择丛林医院？原来在一九○四年（二十九岁）的一个圣灵降临节早上，他看到了一本巴黎传教者协会的刊物。书中全是写一些非洲丛林需要医疗服务的呼吁，其中一篇题为《刚果区传教工作的需要》。这篇文章这样写道：“在非洲大陆丛林中，生活着一大群不信主的土人，该地没有传教士，生病时没有药吃，他们不懂真理、知识低落……凡是那些能坚决回答上帝的呼召，勇敢地说：‘主啊！我要跟随您’……”。这时史怀哲口里也跟着念道：“当主耶稣点头示意的时候，懂得说：‘主啊！我要跟随您’的人，就是我们需要的人。……”这时他知道自己长期曾在二十一岁那一年（一八九六年）下过决心：“三十岁以前要把生命献给传教、教书与音乐，要是能达到研究学问和艺术的愿望，那么三十岁以后就可以直接进入一个立即服务的方向，把个人奉献给全人类。”终于到了要步上人生另一个阶段！接下来便一一实践自己的诺言，除了在斯特拉斯堡获得哲学与神学博士学位外，也在非洲医院里将知识与经验结合，并把他的信仰付诸实现。他就这样过着遵行耶稣诫命，事奉与牺牲生涯，远离文明世界的人。
当史怀哲决心要进入非洲工作时他也明白，即一但开始了在非洲的工作，便等于自己艺术生涯的结束。若久不练琴让手脚因生锈而不用，要抛弃应该就比较容易。但有一天晚上心情郁闷，而正在弹巴赫的一首赋格时，突然亮起了一个念头：“不是可以利用在非洲的空闲时间，磨练和加深自己的琴艺吗？”这样的想法万万也没想到，造就他前后进出非洲十三次常只是为了非洲医院的募款音乐会。在这期间（例如：一九三二年西敏寺圣玛格丽特电台录音广播，以及一九三六年十月在斯特拉斯堡圣欧瑞利亚教堂，为伦敦哥伦比亚唱片公司）所灌录的巴赫管风琴演奏曲唱片，被视为音乐界难忘的成就之一（后来Pearl公司曾自史怀哲在1935/36年所录制的唱盘中转录至 CD，编号是GEMM CD9959）。史怀哲在欧洲旅游同时，除了开演奏会以外，并设计、改造、拯救以免毁坏的管风琴，并将所赚的收入用来盖非洲兰巴伦纳的医院。这样伟大的奉献精神一直被世人传颂着。
